How is your pelvic tilt affecting you?

on Wednesday, 25 January 2017.

Bottoms – are you a flat pack, or a ski slope ? !

Are you always getting hamstring strain?
Or are you the type who can forward bend and touch your toes no problem ?

The reason could simply be the tilt of your pelvis …………..
If you have a posterior tilt to your pelvis then you are likely to have :
A fairly ‘flat ‘ bottom
A sticky out tum
Stretchy hamstrings
Tight quad muscles

Underdeveloped glutes and stretchy hamstrings mean that your back will take the strain and is probably quite strong, but prone to sacro-iliac tension.
This type will benefit from doing exercises to strengthen the glutes and quads, such as squats or the horse riding stance.

Conversely, all those lucky people with J Lo style ski slope bottoms are like that because they have :
An anterior, or forward tilt to the pelvis and
Tight hamstrings
Flatter tummy
Bigger glutes
A weaker back more prone to aches and pains

Because of this the hamstrings take a lot of the strain and are prone to tension ,and take all the strain when doing exercise.
The buttocks are also doing their job of being shock absorbers for the body and providing stability, but this type are more likely to have lower back strain.
People with an anterior tilt to the pelvis can benefit from doing regular hamstring stretches and being careful to strengthen the lower back.

If you can establish which of these types you are then it will help your exercise and stretching routine, and also long term prevention of aches and strains !
It is important and highly advantageous to you to keep the fascia, or connective tissues (which encase and penetrate the muscles ) hydrated and flexible by doing regular stretches or yoga.
When your connective tissue is healthy then your muscles will have good function, movement and circulation.
Bowen Technique helps the muscles, tendons and ligaments by keeping the fascia healthy and happy!

Benefits of grounding yourself

on Thursday, 14 June 2012. Posted in Therapies

In the late 19th century, a back-to-nature movement in Germany claimed many health benefits from being barefoot outdoors, even in cold weather . In the 1920s, White, a medical doctor, investigated the practice of sleeping grounded after being informed by some individuals that they could not sleep properly “unless they were on the ground or connected to the ground in some way,” such as with copper wires attached to grounded-to-Earth water, gas, or radiator pipes. He reported improved sleeping using these techniques . However, these ideas never caught on in mainstream society.

At the end of the last century, experiments initiated independently by Ober in the USA [10] and K. Sokal and P. Sokal [11] in Poland revealed distinct physiological and health benefits with the use of conductive bed pads, mats, EKG- and TENS-type electrode patches, and plates connected indoors to the Earth outside. Ober, a retired cable television executive, found a similarity between the human body (a bioelectrical, signal-transmitting organism) and the cable used to transmit cable television signals. When cables are “grounded” to the Earth, interference is virtually eliminated from the signal. Furthermore, all electrical systems are stabilized by grounding them to the Earth. K. Sokal and P. Sokal, meanwhile, discovered that grounding the human body represents a “universal regulating factor in Nature” that strongly influences bioelectrical, bioenergetic, and biochemical processes and appears to offer a significant modulating effect on chronic illnesses encountered daily in their clinical practices.

Earthing (also known as grounding) refers to contact with the Earth's surface electrons by walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems, some of them patented, that transfer the energy from the ground into the body. Emerging scientific research supports the concept that the Earth's electrons induce multiple physiological changes of clinical significance, including reduced pain, better sleep, a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic tone in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and a blood-thinning effect. The research, along with many anecdotal reports, is presented in a new book entitled Earthing [12].

Bowen Technique and aftercare - Walking

on Thursday, 28 November 2013. Posted in Therapies

After a Bowen treatment I usually hand you a slip of paper with ‘aftercare ‘ on it – to help with your healing the week after .

I thought it would be useful to explain the three main requests which are on that slip in a little more detail, starting with walking.

A Bowen treatment sets many wheels in motion throughout the body –

*it starts a dialogue between the two sides of the Autonomic Nervous System ( put simply, the message pathways between brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body ),

      * it starts a re-set or softening of the fascia or soft tissues which envelope and connect the muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments

With the Bowen move comes increased circulation and thus improved function –BUT you need to help your body and this is where the walking request comes in .

Walking around after a treatment helps your lymphatic system clear out any rubbish which is circulating by use of the muscular movement. If you don’t do it you are effectively sitting in your own dirty water – yuk!

It also ‘resets ‘ the work done every time you stand up and helps to eliminate any stiffness or soreness.

In the words of a clever man ‘ if you keep moving, you keep moving – if you rest ,you rust!’

~ So, after your Bowen treatment please try to keep to the 15 minutes walking per day  - it is in your own best interest and will help your body to heal.~

Daoyin Tao -Fire element

Daoyin Tao and the Chinese five element theory

Those of you have experienced the glorious treatment that is Daoyin Tao might have heard the Five Element Theory mentioned in connection with it, and as we are at the height of Summer (!) think it is time to unleash the Fire Element on you,to warm you up if nothing else!

The Five Elements(that is wood, fire, earth, metal and water) are an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and defining your five element ‘type’ can be a crucial part of maintain good health and eliminating ‘dis-ease’ or imbalance .Of course not everyone fits perfectly into any particular type, just as we don’t all fit our astrological profile exactly.

Here is some general information about the Fire element – see if you recognise any of the characteristics in yourself, or someone you know!!

Chinese five element theory - Metal

Daoyin Tao and the Chinese five element theory

As the leaves are falling and we are into the Autumn I think it is time to send out some information about the Metal element of the Chinese Five Element System. You might also have noticed all around you coughing and spluttering – the Metal element links to the lungs( and large intestine)so coughs are prevalent at this time of year.

Here is some general information about the Metal element – see if you recognise any of the characteristics in yourself, or someone you know!!

Metal Element

Associated season – Autumn

Colour – White

Taste pungent taste – Metal types like pungent foods such as brown rice, asparagus, watercress, radishes, leeks, onions, garlic, venison, rabbit and peppers.

Associated organs and emotional analogies: Lungs (grief) and large intestine (letting go). Personal space and expansion are analogies which link to the Metal element - if the balance in this type is lost they can become ‘inert’ and unable to grieve ,they feel incomplete and inadequate – they develop a misplaced longing for something ,can become materially obsessed emotionally withdrawn. A person with balanced Metal energy is organised, vital, concientious, and likes structure in their life. Think of someone you know with deep inner balance and they are likely to be a Metal element person. They feel comfortable with a good set of rules in place!

Interestingly there was a surge of lung disease after the 2nd World War – caused in part by inability to grieve for lost loves and not being able to move on.

Chinese five elements - Wood

The Five Elements(that is wood, fire, earth, metal and water) are an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and defining your five element ‘type’ can  be a crucial part of maintain good health and eliminating ‘dis-ease’ or imbalance .Of course not everyone fits perfectly into any particular type, just as we don’t all fit our astrological profile exactly.

Here is some general information about the Wood element – see if you recognise any of the characteristics in yourself, or someone you know!!

 Wood Element

Associated season Spring

Taste sour taste – wood personalities like sour foods such as gooseberries, unripe fruits, salad and green veg .Chicken, wheat , tomatoes, rhubarb, vinegar, pineapple and sprouts are all beneficial to wood element people .

Associated organs and emotional analogies: Liver (anger) and Gallbladder (bitterness)are all about planning, decision making, vision, and organising. The liver controls movement of fluids in the body so stagnation or imbalance can cause a person to become angry, unmotivated, frustrated, irritable, obstinate, unable to plan ahead, over assertive, and prone to rages .The gallbladder meridian when out of balance can lead to bitterness, depression and inability to make decisions.

Wood element people can have addictive personalities i.e . get hooked on alcohol, drugs etc.

Physical manifestations : The gallbladder meridian zigzags across the head so wood element people can be prone to migraine and headaches, neck tension, eye issues, digestive problems, skin complaints, knee issues, (in fact any ligament or tendon issues) .Women with gallbladder imbalances may be prone to heavy periods and fibroids ,and, more obviously, gallbladder problems!

The outlet for the liver and gallbladder is the eyesdo you know anyone with piercing yet watery eyes? In my experience a classic symptom of someone with a chip on their shoulder, bitterness issues, and a bad temper simmering just under the surface. Keep a subtle eye on their alcohol intake next time you go to the pub with them (!), they are likely to have a liver imbalance and can be prone to rage – you have been warned!

Wind is the other element associated with the liver and gallbladder meridians  –‘ wood’ people don’t like the wind and can become ill if exposed to it ,(the gallbladder points on the neck are called the ‘windgates’)so wrap a scarf around your neck and keep out of drafts.

Constipated? Get things moving with a bit of reflexology!

on Monday, 24 September 2007.

Did you know that reflexology can work wonders for you when your bowel is a bit sluggish and you just can't go ?! Here's what you need to do :
Turn your palms towards you, particularly the LEFT palm, and have a good feel of the fleshy pad at the base of your left thumb .This area on your hand relates to the bowel and if you are constipated you might find that this area is lumpy or tender . Give it a good massage - a good tip is to roll a pencil or pen between your palms over the fleshy pads at the base of your thumbs - and see what happens! Make sure you drink plenty of water to help things along .
This is also safe for children as they will sit for ages on the toilet waiting for something to happen!

Diary of a bad back!

on Sunday, 13 May 2007.

It is what you might call poetic that the creator of a self help product for people with bad backs should be struck down with a nasty back pain this month !! It was the result of very vigorous gardening on the May bank holiday and not being careful about my posture;I should know better -after all,I'm always telling other people!
Something went ping! in my lower back and a shooting pain went right through me as if I had been struck by lightning; I let go of the spade and yelped .That put paid to my gardening that day and the following is a diary of the week .
Tuesday 8th May -my birthday! felt a bit stiff and found it hard to get up and down from sitting easily;started to get an ache around my middle and persistent pain if I leant back .
Wednesday 9 May -didn't sleep at all well and found it really hard to get out of bed.Very nasty pain all around my middle and especially in my right hip area .Muscles in back also felt really stiff and made my shoulders and neck feel tense too .
7a.m. Wed - pain level 7 out of 10 .Put my reflosocks on straight away and set about getting kids ready for school .Luckily I don't have to go to work today .
10a.m. Wed- pain level 5 out of 10 .Have been walking around ;still hard to sit and bend; pain around middle still .
4.30-6p.m. Wed- sat and watched a DVD with kids that they had bought me for my birthday-had lots and lots of pain on getting up- 8 out of10.Still wearing my reflosocks until about 7p.m.when I went and had a very hot bath(with difficulty).
Thursday 10 May- had a really bad sleep last night, couldn't get comfortable and had severe problems getting out of bed and bending.
7a.m. thursday - in considerable pain this morning-have put my socks on again first thing -pain level 9 out of 10 - tried to find a comfortable rest point in between getting kids ready for school, but unable to .Noticed muscles are really tight and seized up which must be excacerbating the problem wherever it is -concentrating on trying to relax my muscles ,but this is hard as I have a band of pain around my middle and a throbbing pain in my right hip .
11.30a.m. Thursday - pain level 4 out of 10 - pain has eased considerably now .I have more movement, less stiffness and pains have gone.I have drunk lots of water this morning and also lay on my back with my feet together and my knees out like a frog for half an hour . Is the pain worse today because I wore my reflosocks all day yeterday and my body is responding? Who knows.
5p.m. Thursday- pain has decreased dramatically - had a sleep for 1 hour and felt o.k. lying down .Drinking lots ofwater still and wearing Reflosocks .Still stiff on sitting and rising -shooting pains in hip area have stopped .
Friday and Saturday - Felt much better and did not even bother putting my Reflosocks on -however Saturday night I had to get up in the middle of the night to see to one of the dogs and something pulled in my back on the right again as I leaned over to the dog .
Sunday 13 May -right side of pelvis feels tense and sore on rising this morning - put Reflosocks back on this morning .pain level 5 out of 10.
2.30p.m. -pain level 2 out of 10 - throbbing pain in right hip area has stopped now, even though I have been sitting down for half an hour .Hopefully I will get a good nights' sleep again tonight!
conclusion : I am happy that I didn't have to resort to taking any painkillers this week -I wore my Reflosocks ,drank lots ofwater and tried to concentrate on relaxing my muscles. However I will continue to wear my socks to work next week for at least two days out of five as a precautionary measure,as I am up,down, turning and twisting all day at work. Have a look at my Reflotherapies website for more information on reflexology and Reflosocks.
